Do you have lucid dreams?

The Yale University School of Medicine seeks volunteers for a research study on lucid dreams and cognition.

If you are age 18-50 you may qualify. This study involves answering questions, keeping track of your sleep, doing cognitive tasks on a computer, and spending one or more nights in a sleep laboratory.

Volunteers will be paid for participation.

Hmm...I might be interested. Would it require travel to spend a night in the laboratory?

Hi Irbidprodigy. Thanks for your interest. Unfortunately, we are looking for 18 and above. So perhaps we might work together sometime in the future. Even better, it sounds like someday you will be conducting lucid dreaming research of your own! Smile

Thanks for your interest n8b.The study would require first a brief phone interview, then a bit of travel and an overnight sleep study at our sleep lab ...but please do give us a call! We would love to hear from you and answer any questions you might have.

Thanks again!

Hi Cronin,

Dates for both the phone interviews, computer tasks and overnight sleep study would be essentially up to you and your schedule. Our team, for the most part, is pretty flexible timewise.

Thanks for your interest!

I am an avid Lucid Dreamer and would like to learn more about the research that you are planning. Are you still accepting applicants?

I'm excited that there is lucid dream research going on at Yale. Is this a thesis? How where you able to get it accepted? Are you a medical student? What department are you in and which professor is overseeing your thesis? If this is not a Yale thesis, are you doing it on your free time? How are you dealing with the fact that Hobson and a large portion of the dream theory community views lucid dreaming as a third state of consciousness? Does your experience point towards lucid dreaming being part of REM. I know that LaBerge states that the high activation in the frontal lobe is left over from eye movements and that Hobson's study was appallingly small, but the amount of activation in the frontal lobe is definitely something to question. If lucid dreaming is not a third state of consciousness, what would this mean for the medical community and or the dream theory community? Finally, what are your objectives in this study?

If you have submitted any writing on lucid dreaming to Yale I would love to see your work.

Finally, I would love to participate in the study. I am 26 and am out of practice with lucid dreaming recently, but it doesn't take long to re-entrain.

I would be interested. I already keep track on my own, so why not? I am 42 years old, and have only been doing it for 2 years. I average a few LD's a week. (and am pretty upset if I go more than a week without one! LOL) Very Happy

Hi Ezra.

Thank you for your interest.

So this is not a thesis and I am a third year psychiatry resident. I am fortunate to be working with some of the most interesting people I have ever come across here at the Yale Department of Psychiatry. With regard to lucidity as a third state of consciousness I am not sure that sleeping and being awake represent two discrete states of consciousness. I am in favor of the model that views states of consciousness as part of a spectrum. The implications for medicine I have yet to try and wrap my head around.

Please call us and thanks again!
