I have notice that people would like to become lucid dreamers but know so little about sleep in general. And that is a must if you want to go any further.

This is an excerpt from my article on this:

"So many people are unaware how important sleep really is in our lives. We sleep one third of our lives but we know so little about what healthy sleep habits are, people are waking up more tired than they were before going to sleep, sleep deprivation is considered normal in today fast pace life, etc. The quality of your sleep directly affects the quality of your waking life, including your mental sharpness, productivity, emotional balance, creativity, physical vitality, and even your weight. Since general knowledge about sleep is neglected, exploration of this field and learning key facts is in most cases left to individuals. To live a healthy life and for general wellbeing everyone should pay attention to the stages of sleep and adopt regular sleeping habits."

Initially, there are two main sleep stages, REM and NREM. In REM (Rapid Eye Movement) your eyes move back and forth and dreaming happens in that phase. NREM precedes REM phase and it consists of four stages through which your brain and body are being prepared for REM. REM is so called the fifth stage of sleep.

It always wondered me how people can be so ignorant about their sleep cycle. Not knowing the importance indeed. Very good article by the way! It has is very informative. The strange thing in the society is that it isn't very normal to go to sleep early enough to have the usual sleep time. This can be seen in the television. All the "interesting" programs are on the television when you should be sleeping already. And socially, it is strange to go to bed early. Especially teenagers, friends, schoolmates also influence you to go in your bed later. And you really need it, you often notice it when you had good night rest.

Thanks, Rox. Yes, recently I've had a talk about TV and technology creating life habits. I am not a TV watcher, I don't even have a TV but so many people around the world spend their evenings in front of that box. They are conditioned to watch at certain times because "they always do that". Society is also pretty rigorous about letting one to live according to his own schedule but things are changing. Modern companies see that and are starting to allow people to work flexi time, etc...

But, yeah, people spend so much sleeping and don't even try to figure out what is happening with their bodies and consciousness.

Thanks alot for this. Had a good read of that article and as of tonight, am going to try and stick to 7.5 or 9 hours of sleep per night. Back to having a bedtime, and thanks again for the better understanding Smile

Thanks for positive comments, I am glad if that helped someone. As part two in this "sleep research" story I have written a new one talking about alertness and how can you synchronize with your biological clock.

Excerpt:

Following my last article about stages of sleep, logical next step is to study the Stanford alertness scale. After you’ve became aware of sleep cycles that rule you sleeping life, you would like to incorporate them in your everyday in such way that they serve your productivity and well being. Easier said than done, right? Well, it doesn’t have to be that way. Scientists at Stanford University have been researching sleep trying to create a scale of one’s alertness to measure action potential of a person at certain time. According to that scale you can quickly asses how sleepy or alert you are, and you can predict your patterns of alertness through the day.

You can read it at: Stanford alertness scale
