I have lately read the book of Robert Waggoner and it intrigued me, it has shown me in what kind of strange ways your body handles, it also shows you the importance of the dream.
What really interested me was the part about the unconscious. When I read about how little we know about this part of yourself I was stunned, there has been claimed that the unconscious. Jung a psychologist claimed that the unconscious is a system of itself that exists near the conscious but a inner and psychic system, he speculated that if it was a system that it might have its own consciousness:
"We have no knowledge about how this unconscious functions but since it is conjectured to be a psychic system it might possibly have all the aspects the conscious has, including perception, apperception, memory, will, affectivity, feeling, reflection, judgement etc. all in subliminal form"
Jung describes what this could mean:
"If the unconscious can contain everything that is know to be a function of the consciousness, then we are faced with the possibility that it too, like the consciousness, possesses a subject, like an ego. That brings out the real point of my argument: the fact, namely, that a second psychic system coexists next to the consciousness. No matter what qualities we suspect it from possessing it is of absolutely revolutionary significance in that it could radically alter our view on the world."
If you consider this it has quite the truth in it. A dream is created by your unconscious. It covers all the aspects you have in your life for example: your friends, things that happened to you in your life and a lot of different aspects. But if you think of all the strange things you encounter in your dreams like strange events, these are also made up by your unconscious.
All the actions of your dream characters are made by your unconscious. And in the example of your dream characters, they can sometimes act independent and individual. If you tell your dream character that he is a projection of you, it will certainly deny your claim. If you show him that he is fake because you can fly, the dream character will copy you. This shows the power of your unconscious.
To me the unconscious seems like a part of yourself that can (almost) only can be examined from your dreams and maybe even better, lucid dreams. I think that this "mysterious" part of yourself is worth the attention.
I would really like to hear your thoughts about this mysterious unconsciousness.

Well, many people have delved into the study of the unconcsious. Some have even indicated that we can change our unconcsious. Albeit it is many times more difficult to change than it is to change our conscious. _________________ "Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night."-Edgar A. I'm more of the school that the unconsciousness is part of you as a person. The whole distinction of unconsciousness versus consciousness doesn't really hold much, I think. My actions are my own, whether I made the decision to perform them consciously or unconsciously. Besides, decision making happens before you consciously think about it anway, so in a way, you are the product of your 'subconscious'. _________________ Quare? Quod vita mea non tua est. |

I agree with ThreeLetterSyndrome.
The unconscious is just another layer of yourself. Perhaps a more hidden layer that is more difficult to manipulate, but it is still a layer of yourself. Thus with proper focus, one can control its apsects.

I agree with you, and I also don't think that the unconsciousness versus consciousness holds much but what I'm trying to say is that the unconsciousness is probably a large and complex system much like the consciousness. And it's strange because we oversee a lot of this unconscious system and I think we can really learn much from it if we try. I certainly think it's a part of you and you should be able to manipulate it. But the way it acts (in dreams) is very strange, it acts like an individual. I think it is really worth studying it as much as the consciousness is studied because it also is a very important part of yourself. |

Well it certainly is an important part of ourselves. Who knows what we'll find out after opening the door. Hopefully something practical. _________________ "Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night."-Edgar A. Poe |

Something that can be useful to us, or something we can be useful to. I suspect that the latter may have to come first! _________________ |

I have been exploring this topic for a long time and there are other ways to communicate with the unconscious. Through the creative process of writing and art. If you approach art in this way the unconscious can be heard. I believe its calling to us all the time but it doesnt speak with the same logic as our conscious mind.
It is another sentience inside us, what people mistakenly call our 'higher' selves.
The two sentiences are seperated for a reason. They both have different jobs to do. Our conscious works with this shared dream or 'concrete reality and time bound'. Whereas the unconscious works within a nuerospace of thought light and its a more plastic (flexable) timeless reality.
Thats just for starters... _________________ It IS a dream |

The creative process is hard to describe for those that havent been deeply involved as its a personal journey but I accessed this information during a realisation inside a dream. Which was that, as you create, you ARE The Creator. You can become Art itself, the creative force (which sounds pompous at first I know). For this approach I haved coined the term 'Sacredism'. Where you treat the whole creative process as a sacred act or ritual if you like. It can take any form but involves putting your own intention aside and let the unconscious govern more what is being revealed through mark making or writing. Similar to Surrealism and channelling. The artist reads their 'own' work as a message sent by the unconscious to themselves and usually anout themselves from that perspective. _________________ It IS a dream |

Interesting post. I'm a long time lucid dreamer myself, and I've also practiced various dream control techniques. In terms of symbolism: on one side, I agree with the group of experts claiming that dreams aren't really mirrors of our subconsciousness. They are models of the world, formed by our assumptions, motivations and expectations. We CAN and SHOULD alter these models if there is something wrong with them (e.g. managing nightmares).
On the other side, creating or seeing dream characters in our dreams might be a truly interesting insight into our own self, as in many cases they represent certain elements of our psyche.
